Climate Action Middlesbrough (CAM) was a five-year partnership programme funded by the National Lottery Community Fund through the Climate Action Fund. Working across Middlesbrough the programme aimed to reduce carbon emissions and encourage more sustainable lifestyles by increasing community action around food, transport, energy, waste and the natural environment. The project brought together community organisations, schools, local residents and public sector partners to raise awareness of climate change, inspire behavioural change and create practical opportunities for people to take action within their own communities.

Our work included supporting Climate Action Clubs within schools, delivering environmental workshops, developing community-based climate projects, engaging young people through surveys and campaigns, and creating opportunities for residents to participate in activities such as gardening, growing food, recycling, litter picking and habitat improvement. The evaluation highlighted the success of this approach, with more than 7,000 young people engaged through climate education and sustainability activities across the lifetime of the programme.

​We also worked alongside communities and partner organisations to give local people a voice in climate action, support environmental training, promote sustainable living campaigns and co-curate the Our Place in the Family of Things exhibition at the Dorman Museum. Through this work, we helped build knowledge, confidence and community ownership of climate action while encouraging positive environmental behaviours that will continue beyond the life of the programme.
